Why pressure units are a mess

Gauge pressure vs. absolute pressure


Here's a trap that catches people: pressure gauges usually read gauge pressure, not absolute pressure. Gauge pressure is measured relative to ambient air pressure. Absolute pressure is measured relative to a perfect vacuum. At sea level, absolute pressure = gauge pressure + 14.7 PSI (or + 1 atm).


So a tire gauge reading 32 PSI is actually 46.7 PSI absolute. A pressure converter converts the number you give it — it doesn't know which type you're dealing with. If you're working with vacuum systems, altimeters, or anything involving absolute pressure, check which reference the original spec uses before converting. This is the single most common source of error in pressure calculations.
